Interested in a Puppy?
We always welcome emails, phone calls and visits! Whether a question regarding our dogs or even just the breed in general please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Our dogs are our family companions above all else, and we dedicate plenty of time and attention into not only raising them, but doing the most we can to get our puppies off to the best possible start as well prior to them leaving our home. We have high expectations from our owners, and insist that our owners have the same high |
expectations from us. These dogs are a large part of our lives, and I look for families who will provide them with the best possible care, training and love as we do. If you are not willing to put the most into raising your new addition as a beloved family member (inside as a housedog) and staying connected with us, a Shadowland GSP is not for you.
Our Goals...
|
We breed minimally, and only when we feel that we can contribute to maintaining the integrity of this wonderful breed by producing sound dogs that follow the breed standard in health, temperament, hunting ability and conformation, with the goal of producing our next generation. While we do breed for ourselves, we can't keep them all. This allows us the opportunity to offer well-bred, healthy, happy puppies to wonderful families looking for a companion/hunting/
performance/show dog. We know owning a GSP will enrich your life as they have ours. We enjoy that by having a limited number of litters in our home every year it allows us to offer each and every puppy born here our undivided attention and care to get them off to the utmost best start prior to them leaving our home at 8 weeks old. Because we always have lots of interest in our puppies, we encourage families to contact us ahead of time to be placed onto our waiting list for future litters. |
Growing up at Shadowland...
|
All of our puppies are born and raised underfoot, inside of our home. Litters are whelped in a bedroom, where mom and her babies spend their first couple weeks in the privacy of a quiet, relaxed atmosphere.
Once their eyes have opened and they start taking in the big world around them we gradually move them out of their whelping box and into the "puppy pen" in our living room on our main floor. There they are exposed to many new things. Puppies are also introduced to the outdoors in our yard between 4-6 weeks old (granted the weather permits) and we introduce them to litter box training to get them started on basic housebreaking manners. As they are gradually weaned off mom they are started on a meat-based, grain-free kibble to get them onto an appropriate, nutritious diet. We will send home a sample of that current food, along with a list of foods we recommend. We try to set up our puppies for the utmost success for their new home prior to them leaving us. We do this by exposing them to all sorts of sights, sounds, smells and surfaces, and lots of people and other dogs prior to leaving so they are well socialized and and pre-spoiled before their new family takes over. |
Picking your Puppy...
|
We do not allow anyone to pick out or put a deposit on a certain puppy straightaway after they're first born, and here's why;
Firstly, when puppies are born they have no senses developed - they cannot hear or see, and the first couple weeks they mostly just enjoy naps and mom's milk bar in the whelping box. GSP's are also born completely white with only their solid markings and patches; they're ticking (spots) will only start to come in over the next several weeks as they grow. Furthermore, at this point they have no personality and truly, hardly any distinguishable features whatsoever. They will start to open their eyes after 2 weeks old, and the period of time between then and the 4 week old mark they will start exploring and discovering the world. At this point they start learning to socialize and come into their own. They'll find an order amongst themselves, and their individual temperaments and distinguishing traits will start to show and develop. Puppies are normally chosen between the 7-8 week old mark, as by this point they will have their own unique personalities, and their features will be quite prominent as well. That being said, we do not allow families to pick based strictly off looks. We believe that temperament is far more important than what markings he/she has - you will be living with this dog for the next 10-15+ years, and you will want to make sure this dog has a personality that fits into your home. Yes, many families have an ideal look in mind when envisioning their future GSP, which is understandable. We recommend to look at the parents of the dog (size, color/markings, temperament) and if they fit what you're looking for go with a particular litter you feel matches these needs best, however there will be a variety between puppies, and at the end of the day choosing the perfect puppy temperament wise should be your ultimate goal. We always reserve the right to first pick puppy out of the litter (our goal is to breed to produce our next generation, first and foremost), and afterwards puppies are matched with their new families appropriately. We do evaluate each of our puppies as they grow, and will offer temperament recommendations to help in your decision. In most cases, we will choose a puppy based off of which temperament is the most compatible with your home, and your needs in what you'd like for a dog. We have had excellent success with our puppies finding homes that are perfect for the family and vice versa! We want all of our puppy families to be excited and involved in their new addition growing up, and we will keep you updated with many pictures every week (oftentimes, more so) as they grow! We also encourage families that are able to come visit and interact with the babies as often as they would like! |
